Identity verification of starting materials for cannabinoid preparations

• Cannabis extracts and cannabis flowers are starting materials for prescription drugs and must be tested for proper quality in accordance with §6 and §11 Apothekenbetriebsordnung (ApbeTro).
• If there is a test certificate in accordance with §6 ApbeTro, an identity check at the pharmacy is sufficient.
• The test requirements can be found in the monographs of the German Pharmacopoeia (DAB):
  • DAB: “Cannabis flowers - Cannabis flos”
  • DAB: “Discontinued cannabis extract - Cannabis extractum normatum”

The evidence for THC and CBD is carried out by thin-layer chromatography (Ph. Eur. 2.2.27). Alternatively, other methods of identity verification (such as a combined rapid test) can be used, and their use should be coordinated in advance with the pharmacist or official pharmacist.
